The Day-Trip Essentials

Quick-Dry Towel

Water Shoes or Sandals with Heel Strap

Required by law for human-powered vessels on navigable waters. Three blasts means distress. It’s the simplest emergency signal you’ll ever carry.

Waterproof Dry Bag (10–20L)

A Downloaded Offline Map

Cell coverage disappears fast on Saguaro Lake and much of the Salt River. Gaia GPS, onX Backcountry, or AllTrails with offline tiles downloaded before you leave is standard practice.

Reusable Trash Bag

Pack it in, pack it out. Arizona’s most iconic water destinations stay beautiful because enough people practice this consistently. It also keeps your rental vessel clean, which matters for your deposit.

Life Jacket / PFD

Whistle or Sound-Producing Device

Sunscreen (Reef-Safe, High SPF)

Know Your Permit Requirements

The Conditions-Based Setup

High Sun / High Heat (April through October)

Sun Hoody / UPF 50+ Long-Sleeve Shirt

Wide-Brim Hat with Chin Strap

Polarized Sunglasses with Floating Strap

Water glare is genuinely fatiguing over a full day. Polarized lenses reduce strain and improve visibility into the water which is relevant for both navigation and fishing. Floating strap saves them when they fall.

Cooling Towel or Spray Bottle

For anchored or slower-moving time on the water, active cooling makes a noticeable difference in Arizona’s summer heat index. Simple and cheap to carry.

Cold / Spray / Early Season (November through March)

Wetsuit or Drysuit Activity Appropriate

Neoprene Gloves

Waterproof Jacket / Paddle Jacket

Wind and spray in 55-degree air temperatures can bring core temperature down quickly. A breathable waterproof shell is the most versatile piece of cold-weather water gear you can own.
